This half term, our topic in computing has been 'Digital Painting'. This week, KS1 recreated the pointillism painting that we explored in last week's lesson however this week, they were using paint and paper instead of the laptop! We compared the differences between using paint and the laptops and discussed which method we preferred.
Sophie - I preferred using the laptops because I find computers easier.
Freddie R - I like using the laptops because it's more fun.
William - I like using paint because I can see my work.
Freddie M - I like using paint because you can keep your work.
Orla - I like paint better because you don't have to log on to the laptop.
Computing - Digital Painting
This half term, our topic in computing has been 'Digital Painting'. In our lessons, KS1 have been exploring the 'Paint' app to create digital works of art. Each week we have been learning about and studying works of art by different artists such as Seurat, Kandinsky and Matisse. We have explored their artwork and discussed how they created their pieces, and then used digital technology to try and replicate them. The children have loved getting to grips with the different tools and using their computer skills to create their digital artwork!
Science - Testing Materials
This half term, KS1 have been learning about different materials and testing their properties. Last week, the children designed their own boats using different materials, thinking about the different properties that would be useful. Today we worked in groups to build our boats and then test them to see if they would float and sail. It was lots of fun!
RE - The Christmas Story
In RE this half term, KS1 have been learning all about the Christmas story and why Christians celebrate Christians. This afternoon we talked about how Christmas is a time to be thankful, as Christians are grateful to God for sending Jesus down to Earth. We then discussed who we are thankful for in our own lives and who we want to give thanks to this Christmas time. We created a class paper chain to say thank you to the wonderful people in our community to be grateful for this Christmas.
History - Schools from the past
This half term, KS1 are learning about what schools were like 100 years ago. This afternoon we acted out our very own 'day in the life' from schools over 100 years ago! We had hand inspection, chanted our times tables and wrote with chalk and ink!
Science - Colour Walk
This morning KS1 have been on a colour walk as part of our text this week, 'The Colour Monster'. We had a walk in nature and saw what different colours we could spot! We made predictions of which colours would be most or least popular then we sorted them into the sorting hoops to see if we were correct!
Science - Testing Materials
This afternoon, KS1 have been testing the properties of different materials. We conducted a test to find out if we could find the bendiest stick. We explored our school grounds and tested different sticks to see if we could spot any patterns. We then sorted the sticks into different piles, 'bendy', 'not bendy' and 'broken'. We found out that the bendiest sticks were thin and the most rigid sticks were thick.
Science - Egg Drop
This half term, KS1 have been learning about different materials in our Science lessons. This afternoon, we all went into the hall to test which materials would be best to protect an egg. We discussed which materials we predicted would be the most protective and which materials would be the least protective. We then collected different items from around the school to drop our eggs in. We dropped the eggs and observed whether the material had successfully protected the egg or not! It was lots of fun!
Science - Testing Materials
Today, KS1 have been testing different materials to see which ones would have the best properties for a parachute to protect our egg! We discussed which materials we thought would work best and then put them to the test!
Science - Testing Materials
Today, KS1 have been testing the bounciness of different materials as part of our Science topic. Last week, we learned all about Charles Dunlop and the invention of the tire. We worked together to create a fair test to test which materials would be best suited to making a tire. We tested sponge, plastic, foam, rubber and a tennis ball to see which ball would bounce the furthest. We discovered that the sponge ball bounced the furthest and the rubber ball bounced the least.
Science - Testing Materials
This afternoon KS1 were testing the stretchiness of different materials. We measured the length of different objects and then predicted which one we thought would stretch the most. We then stretched the materials and measured them again to see which material was the most stretchy. We tested string, play-doh, tights, elastic bands and a pencil.
Maths - Representing numbers to 100
This half term, KS1 are learning about numbers 0-100 and how to represent them in different ways. Today, we worked practically to choose a 2-digit number and show that number in as many ways as we could. We used bead strings, place value counters, base 10, expanded forms and place value cards to represent the number. It was lots of fun!
