Week commencing 11 November 2024
This week in maths we have been finishing our unit on addition and subtraction by understanding:
complements to 100 - : 45 + 55 = 100, 33 + 67 = 100
estimation - rounding numbers to the nearest multiple of 10 before adding or subtracting: 47 + 26 = 73, 50 + 30 = 80. By making the numbers simpler to add but keeping them close to their real value gives the children an ideas as to whether their answer is correct or not.
inverse - this helps us to check our answers or find unknown numbers. Addition and subtraction are the inverse of each other. 45 + 55 = 100, 100 - 55 = 45
In English, we have been completing our instructions on how to mummify a body. The children have done really well with including time connectives, imperative verbs and subject specific vocabulary to produce a great set of instructions.
In PE, the children have been choreographing their own Egyptian dance routine using travelling, mirroring and levels. They have been very creative.
Homework - children are to read at home 3 times per week and practise their multiplication tables.
Week Commencing 4th November
Dear Families,
We have had a very busy week this week with our open morning. The children thoroughly loved having their adults come in and and make Egyptian crafts with them. We had a go at making Egyptian flat breads which the children thought was delicious.
This week in maths, we have been continuing with our column addition and subtraction. We are learning that we must lay our work out precisely and show our exchanges. Below are the methods used for addition and subtraction should you want to practise with your child.
In English, we have been learning all about the ancient Egyptian process of mummification so that we can write out own set of instructions. At the end of our week we used role play to carry out the different processes of mummification on a dead body (Barbie).
In Geography, we have started a new topic about the United Kingdom. Test you child to see if they can name the 4 countries of the UK, their capital cities, flags and national flower.
Week commencing 14 October 2024
Dear Families,
This week in English, we have started our new book, Secrets of a Sun King by Emma Carroll, which is around the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb. We have been learning lots of new vocabulary and making predictions on who the sun king could be.
In maths, we have been learning different methods to help us add and subtract across 10 or 100 in preparation for using the column method. The children have been great at choosing a method that best suits them.
We have been lucky this week to be able to carry out 2 science investigations centered around observations over time. This first is linked to our history topic the Egyptians, where we have started the process to mummify a tomato and the second is to discover what soil is made of.
In art we have finished painting our Egyptian sculptures and the children took them proudly home.
Week commencing 30th September 2024
Dear Families,
This week in maths, we have started a new topic on addition and subtraction. We have been adding and subtracting ones, tens and hundreds to a 3-digit number without an exchange. This has helped the children to develop their understanding of which column will change depending on what we are adding or subtracting.
In English, we have begun a retell of the narrative 'The Egyptian Cinderella'. We are focusing on our detail by including noun phrases, conjunctions and prepositions in our writing.
In Science, we have been replicating the process of fossilisation to develop our understanding. We placed playdoh in the bottom of a cup to represent the sea bed, then we put a layer of icing sugar on the playdoh followed by a dog bone and another layer of icing sugar, this represented the animals' flesh and bones. We then added water to represent rainfall and food colouring to represent the dirt and mud. Finally we placed a layer of tissue over the layers and pressed it in tightly to represent layers of sediment. We are looking forward to uncovering it in the coming week and revealing our fossil.
Week commencing 23 September 2024
Dear Families,
This week in maths, we have been comparing and ordering numbers up to 1,000. We have also been using our 5 multiplication tables to help us count up in 50s.
In English, we have been completing our non-chronological report on Ancient Egypt. The children took great care when producing their final draft. To make it more appealing to the reader they included pictures and fact boxes.
In PE, we have been practising our passing skills by using a chest pass, overhead pass, or bounce pass. We have also been practising our triple threat stance and recognising when we cause a violation such as double dribbling and travelling with the ball.
Week Commencing 16 September 2024
Dear Families,
This week in English, we have been researching and reading all about the ancient Egyptians such as their landscape, religion, homes, food, dress and much more in preparation for writing a non-chronological report. Did you know that the ancient Egyptians worshipped over 2,000 gods!
In maths, we have been continuing our learning with place value. We have been working with numberlines to 1,000 and had a lot of fun creating number lines on the play ground. We made sure we knew our start point, end point and number of intervals to work out what we were counting up in.
We are making an Egyptian sculpture in art, and this week made a mould using foam printing and then cast the mould using clay and plaster of Paris. Once the mould has set, we can then move on to the drawing and painting of the artwork.
